How you deal with an injury in the first few days after the trauma can have a huge impact on the healing process that follows. Acronyms have been offered to help us decide which approach to take and these have evolved over the years<\/span><\/span> from ICE to RICE, then to PRICE <span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXW62827272\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW62827272\">(see meaning at bottom of article)<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXW16196196\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW16196196\">In April 2019, the acronym was corrected in light of scientific advances in the field. In fact, a Quebec update was presented to the international scientific community as there was a need<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW99366206\">to be a little more\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2 BCX0 SCXW99366206\">rigorous<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW99366206\"> in the management of acute musculoskeletal injuries. One of the main changes was to removal of the &#8220;I&#8221; (For ICE). The possible negative effect of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2 BCX0 SCXW99366206\">hypermedicating patients<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW99366206\"> has also now been taken into account. Presented below is the new PEACE &amp; LOVE method!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>PEACE &amp; LOVE<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Immediately after soft tissue injury, do no harm and let <strong>PEACE<\/strong> guide your approach.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>P<\/strong> = Protection (<span class=\"TextRun SCXW54407350 BCX0\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW54407350 BCX0\">avoid painful activities in the first few days<\/span><\/span>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>E<\/strong> = Elevation (raise the affected limb as often as possible so that it is higher than the heart)<\/li>\n<li><strong>A<\/strong> = Anti-inflammatory to be avoided (<span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXW101134036\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW101134036\">avoid anti-inflammatory drugs and ice as much as possible<\/span><\/span>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong> = Compression (apply an elastic bandage or ideally a <span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXW12854626\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW12854626\">compression <\/span><\/span>taping to reduce initial swelling)<\/li>\n<li><strong>E<\/strong> = Education (learn<span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXW141479063\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW141479063\">\u00a0the best management practices<\/span><\/span>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>After the first few days, the soft tissues need <strong>LOVE<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>L<\/strong> = Load (<span class=\"TextRun SCXW84271018 BCX0\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW84271018 BCX0\">progression of loading and movement without pain<\/span><\/span>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>O<\/strong> = Optimism (be confident and positive <span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXW241620776\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW241620776\">about your recovery<\/span><\/span>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>V<\/strong> = Vascularization (<span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXW94601363\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW94601363\">the damaged tissue must be vascularized and metabolism must be increased by the practice of cardiovascular activities<\/span><\/span>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>E<\/strong> = Exercises (<span class=\"TextRun BCX0 SCXW76420452\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX0 SCXW76420452\">to promote active rehabilitation<\/span><\/span>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2721 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/physiodynamik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/lcdc-peacenlove-eng-519x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"565\" height=\"653\" data-wp-pid=\"2721\" srcset=\"https:\/\/physiodynamik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/lcdc-peacenlove-eng-519x600.jpg 519w, https:\/\/physiodynamik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/lcdc-peacenlove-eng-768x888.jpg 768w, https:\/\/physiodynamik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/lcdc-peacenlove-eng-886x1024.jpg 886w, https:\/\/physiodynamik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/lcdc-peacenlove-eng-800x925.jpg 800w, https:\/\/physiodynamik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/lcdc-peacenlove-eng-600x693.jpg 600w, https:\/\/physiodynamik.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/lcdc-peacenlove-eng.jpg 1246w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 565px) 100vw, 565px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>For the curious, here is one of the &#8220;old&#8221; acronyms previously used:<\/p>\n<p><strong>P \/ R \/ ICE<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>P<\/strong> = Protection (make sure not to cause pain the first few days)<\/li>\n<li><strong>R<\/strong> = Rest or Activity Reduction (often misinterpreted as a cessation of activity)<\/li>\n<li><strong>I<\/strong> = Ice (apply ice pack 15 minutes during the first 2 to 3 days (every 1 to 2 hours))<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong> = Compression (apply elastic bandage or ideally taping to reduce initial swelling)<\/li>\n<li><strong>E<\/strong> = Elevation (raise the affected limb as often as possible so that it is higher than the heart)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Thank you to our Quebec physiotherapist colleagues for their involvement in the scientific community on the subject.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Blaise Dubois <\/strong>is the president and founder of The Running Clinic, an organization providing continuing education internationally.
